Industrial Application of Protective Coatings
Energetics
Impellers, turbine blades, etc. - properly chosen and applied ceramic coatings are critical for prolonging the life of metals that are exposed to continuous immersion in liquids. Ceramic coatings are resistant to wear, abrasion, cavitation, corrosion, and high temperatures.
Chemical and pharmaceutical

Surface hardening protective coatings
Hard Chrome plating
Industrial chome plating is used on surfaces that require extreme hardness and corrosion resistance.
Advantages include extreme surface hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and minimal friction.
Application:
- Construction industry– spherical bearings - these bearings are suitable for use on steel structures and industrial facilities. The steel properties of low friction and surface hardness translate into significant savings on structural pillars and supports.
- Engineering industry- hydraulic cylinder rods and tubes, motor shafts, dies, bearings, railway wheels etc.
- Parts for the aerospace, textile, and paper industries, molds for rubber and plastics industries, and many other applications
Chemical nickel plating
Highly resistant to corrosion due to its low porosity. The paint may be thermally hardened up to 1000 HV. Its characteristics include high resistance to abrasion, surface lubricity, semi-gloss and high-gloss sheen, and non-toxic oil.
Application:
Used in numerous applications, especially when extreme hardness and corrosion resistance are required.
Types of coatings
Protective coatings are categorized by their chemical properties and belong to one of the three following groups:
Non-metallic inorganic coatings
Non-metallic inorganic coatings and layers protect the underlying material due to its impenetrability of corrosive agents, higher corrosion resistance corrosion and passivation of metal surfaces protected.
Categories of non-metallic inorganic coatings:
- Conversion layers- phosphating, chromating, burnishing, decorative anodising and hardening
- Ceramic coatings - nonmetallic inorganic coating forming massive molten metal layer on the substrate (barrier effect). Ceramic coatings provide corrosion protection in the environment of organic, inorganic acids, water, hot steam condensation, mineral water, alkaline solutions, condensates and 2SO4 gaseous halogens.

Inorganic coatings- coatings are based on an inorganic substance. Examples include:
- Water glass coatings
- Silicic acid based coatings
- Portland cement coatings
- Linings and tiles - a special group of protective coatings. Basic metal coating or affixes of the vyzdívkou line of tiles or bricks made from stoneware, porcelain, glass or kyselinovzdorného concrete. Metallic coatings

Categories of metallic coatings:
Galvanic coatings:
Suited for bearings and metal parts that are exposed directly to humid or corrosive environments. Coating provides protection against water, condensation, and slightly alkaline or acidic cleaning agents.
Types of galvanic coatings:
- Protective(corrosion protection) - typical coating properties include zinc and cadmium, nickel, two-component coatings copper-nickel, and in some cases silver, gold,and platinum.
- Decorative(rotection and aesthetics) – for steel and non-ferrous metals can be used in addition to single-component coating (nickel, chrome) and multicomponent coatings (copper-nickel-chromium, nickel-chromium, such as cars)
- Specialfor example, protection against wear (hard chrome), to obtain a special magnetic properties (coating of pure iron), etc.
Hot dip coating in molten metals
- Galvanizing - excellent corrosion resistance.
- hot-dip tin - primarily focused on plating metal (called a white sheet) and equipment in the food industry - glossy surface corrosion resistant, non-toxic coating.
- hot leaded - leaded plates are used for manufacturing tanks and equipment for the chemical industry due to good lead resistance against sulfur compounds - coatings highly resistant to aggressive atmosphere, suitable for food industry
- hot hliníkování - corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant coatings.
- zinc alloy plating Zn - coatings containing 5 -50% Al. Corrosion resistance Zn50Al to 2.5 times higher than in the zinc coating
Thermal sprayed metal coatings
The coatings thickness may range from thin to thick. Coating properties include zinc, aluminum, silver, copper, bronze, coatings based on Mo, or bronze alloy composition.
Application:
- Protection against corrosion and high temperatures - noble metals, inert ceramic or plastic can be used as the base material protection against corrosion in different environments - distribution and rotating gas turbine blades, furnace systems, components and combustion chambers of jet engines.
- Renovation of machine parts - the renovation of worn parts (bearings, pins cylinders, plungers, pistons, etc.)
- Repair of damaged or porous castings, special mold ap.
Organic coatings
The most widely used method of surface protection (80-90% of all coatings) is organic based coatings.
Surface properties: high protective efficacy, ease of implementation, specific properties (conductive, fungicides), safety features (depending on the type of paint or by technology type)
Important is the finish before painting. Since the surface treatment is expected to remove scale, corrosion products, dust, fly ash, grease, old paint residue.
The number of layers and thickness of coatings are selected according to the environment, the type of coating system required service life and performance of the coating layer and multilayer (filling, cement, base and topcoat)
